Peter Gabriel was born in 1950, in Surrey, England, and showed early promise in music. In 1967 he formed the band Genesis with some schoolmates and they achieved success in the early 1970s. However, musical differences occurred and Gabriel left to pursue a solo career as a singer and songwriter with his own style.
In 1986, with his seventh solo album, Gabriel won his first Grammy Award for musical excellence, and the accompanying video for the song ‘Sledgehammer’ has also since won awards for its innovative style. Building on his love for and desire to promote world music, Gabriel founded Real World Studios in Wiltshire England in 1986, with an aim to record and thus promote often little-heard artists from around the world.
Peter Gabriel has also been very focussed on the issues of human rights and the environment. In the late 1980s and through the 90s he toured under the Amnesty International banner with other recognised popular artists, such as the Americans Tracy Chapman and Bruce Springsteen, England’s ‘Sting’ and the Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour. He has also travelled to countries such as Russia to assist in establishing local branches of the environmental organisation Greenpeace, and more recently has been involved with the visual and digital arts, pioneering the blending of music and visuals and motion, and earning recognition from the British Contemporary Arts for his work, as well as continuing to garner accolades for his music.
The answer above covers the key and differing aspects of Peter Gabriel’s career.
